14-Day Roman Germany Tour:
May 12 – May 25, 2014
Join the Mediterranean Society of America for an in-depth tour highlighting ancient sights and Roman influences in Germany.
Although the seminar is open to everyone, the only requirement is
that all participants should be, or become, members of the society. A Post-Tour Extension is also available from Dresden and Berlin during May 25 – 28, 2014.
All the hotels are listed in the itinerary below. Meals included in the price of the trip are indicated by the letters B, L, D. UNESCO World Heritage Sites are designated by the acronym WHS.
ITINERARY
Monday, May 12: Overnight  direct  flight from Washington, D.C. (Dulles) to Frankfurt, Germany. 
Tuesday, May 13: Arrive in Frankfurt in the morning. Transfer to hotel in Mainz.  Remainder of the day is free. Dine tonight at a local restaurant. Four nights at Novotel Mainz (4*). D
Wednesday, May 14: Take a city tour of Mainz, including Church of St. Stephan with its stained glass windows by Marc Chagall and the Mainzer Dom. Enjoy a free afternoon for individual interests.  Dine tonight at a local restaurant. B, D
Thursday, May 15: Visit the Gutenberg and the Roman Ship museums in the morning. After lunch, visit the Roman Theater. Dine tonight at a local restaurant. B, D
Friday, May 16: Drive to Speyer, take a walking tour, and visit the Speyer cathedral (WHS).  After lunch, drive to Nierstein for a wine tasting at Estate Strub. Return to Mainz and dine at a local restaurant. B, D
Saturday, May 17:  Travel to Hermeskeil to visit the Roman Castrum excavations. Continue to Trier. After lunch, take a guided tour of Trier (WHS).   Trier’s Roman highlights include the Porta Nigra, the Roman amphitheater, and the Imperial Baths. Dine tonight at the hotel restaurant.  One night at Penta Hotel Trier (4*). B, D
Sunday, May 18: Free morning in Trier for individual interests.  Drive to Cologne, taking a break for lunch
enroute. Upon arrival in Cologne, take a guided tour of Cologne Cathedral (WHS).  Dine tonight at a local restaurant. Four nights at Adagio Hotel Cologne (4*) B, D
Monday, May 19: Drive to the Archaeological Park of Xanten (Colonia Ulpia Traiana). Take a guided tour of the site. Have an authentic Roman lunch at Römische Herberge.  In the afternoon, take a guided tour of the museum or the baths. Return to the hotel. The evening is free. B, L
Tuesday, May 20: Drive to Aachen in the morning and take a guided tour of the old town.  After lunch, tour the Aachen Cathedral and Treasury (WHS). Return to Cologne. Dine tonight at a local restaurant. B, D
Wednesday, May 21: Take a two-hour tour of Roman Cologne including a visit to the Romano-Germanic
Museum. The remainder of the day is free in Cologne for individual interests and discoveries. Dine tonight at a local restaurant. B, D
Thursday, May 22:  Leave Cologne and drive to Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler to visit the Roman Villa Museum. After lunch, drive through the scenic Middle Rhine Valley (WHS), stopping to visit the Lorelei Rock. Upon arrival in Frankfurt, check into the hotel.  Dine tonight at a local restaurant.   Three nights at the Intercity Hotel Frankfurt (4*). B, D
Friday, May 23: Drive to Heidelberg. Visit the Heidelberg Castle and stroll through the old town. Drive to
Schwetzingen to have lunch at a famous local restaurant. After lunch, visit Schwetzingen Palace and Gardens. Return to Frankfurt. The evening is free.  B, L
Saturday, May 24:  Visit Frankfurt’s city center including the Emperor Hall of the Romer (City Hall). After lunch, drive to Saalburg Bad Homburg to visit the Saalburg Museum and Archaeology Park.  Return to Frankfurt. Dine tonight at a local restaurant. B, D
Sunday, May 25: Fly from Frankfurt, Germany, to Washington, D.C. (Dulles), arriving early afternoon. B.
